In practice, a large share of the machines we see described as "too slow, probably time for a new one" have one fixable bottleneck. An ageing mechanical hard drive is the usual culprit. Replacing it with an SSD, clearing the dust out, and trimming what loads at startup routinely produces a machine that is genuinely pleasant to use for several more years.

An hour spent wiping it, reinstalling cleanly and checking the drive health turns an unknown quantity into something you can rely on — and tells you early if the drive is on its way out.
