Browns Plains anchors a large residential catchment in southern Logan, built around Grand Plaza and the surrounding retail and service centre. It is a family-heavy area with a mix of established homes and newer estates spreading out around it.

The work here is overwhelmingly household computing, and the single most valuable thing we bring to it is not technical. It is being straight about what is worth spending money on.

Repair or replace, answered honestly

A lot of households here are managing a budget carefully, and the standard experience with computer repair is not encouraging: a vague diagnosis, an open-ended quote, and a strong suggestion that a new machine would really be the answer.

Our position is different for a structural reason rather than a promotional one. Our technicians are salaried employees, not contractors on a percentage and not a franchise recovering a royalty. Nobody at Afford IT earns more by selling you a computer you did not need, so the advice you get is the advice we would give a relative.

In practice, a large share of the machines we see described as "too slow, probably time for a new one" have one fixable bottleneck. An ageing mechanical hard drive is the usual culprit. Replacing it with an SSD, clearing the dust out, and trimming what loads at startup routinely produces a machine that is genuinely pleasant to use for several more years.

Browns Plains jobs

Slow computers. The most common call by a wide margin, and the one where honest diagnosis matters most. We will tell you which of the six usual causes applies to your machine and what each would cost to address, before you commit to anything.

Virus and unwanted software. Shared family machines accumulate adware, browser hijacks and "optimiser" software that creates the problem it offers to fix. A proper clean deals with the browser and startup damage this leaves behind, which a plain antivirus scan does not.

Homework and school devices. With a large school-age population, a laptop that will not start or a printer that will not print is a genuine household emergency. Call early in the day where you can.

WiFi coverage. Newer estate homes are often two storeys with the connection point in a garage or study at one end. The upstairs bedrooms are the predictable dead spots, and a single well-placed node usually resolves it.

Data recovery and backup. Family photographs on one computer with no second copy is the norm. We would far rather spend an hour setting up a backup than a much larger sum attempting a recovery.

Second-hand and handed-down machines. Plenty of households here are running a computer bought used or passed on from family. Those arrive with someone else's account still signed in, unknown software installed, and no idea what condition the drive is in. An hour spent wiping it, reinstalling cleanly and checking the drive health turns an unknown quantity into something you can rely on — and tells you early if the drive is on its way out.

Scam aftermath. As everywhere. Disconnect, call your bank if money was involved, then call us.

Questions from Browns Plains customers

Ask us before you decide. Most machines we are told are past it have one fixable bottleneck, usually an ageing mechanical hard drive. An SSD, a dust cleanout and a startup trim often produce a computer that is genuinely good for several more years, at a fraction of a replacement. If yours is truly finished we will say so.

Our technicians are salaried employees — not subcontractors on a percentage, and not a franchise recovering a royalty. Nobody here earns more by selling you hardware. That is a structural difference in how the business is built, not a promise, and it is the reason the advice tends to be more conservative than you might expect.

No. Browns Plains is one of our longest runs and it is still $135 per hour with no callout fee, no travel fee and no zone surcharge. If you can be flexible about the day we can often get to you sooner, but the price is the same either way.
