Check your backup actually works — most don’t

The worst time to discover a backup problem is after the drive dies. These four checks take minutes and are the same ones we’d run first.

  1. Restore one file, right now. Open your backup or cloud storage, pick any file, and restore it somewhere. If you can’t do that in two minutes, you don’t have a backup — you have hope.
  2. Check your cloud sync is actually running. OneDrive, Google Drive and iCloud all stop silently when the account is signed out or the storage is full. Look for the icon in your system tray and check for a red cross or a “storage full” warning.
  3. Count your copies. The rule of thumb is 3-2-1: three copies of anything important, on two different types of storage, one of them away from the house. Most homes are at exactly one copy.
  4. Don’t trust a single USB drive in a drawer. They fail without warning, and a burglary or house fire takes the original and the “backup” together. Pair the drive with a cloud copy.
