The checklist we’d run first anyway
These four steps solve most “internet is down” calls, and step two tells you where the fault lives even when they don’t.
- Power-cycle the modem and router properly. Off at the power point, wait 30 seconds, back on — then give it five full minutes to reconnect before judging. Most dropouts end right here.
- Work out: one device, or every device? If only one device is struggling, the problem is that device. If everything in the house is out, it’s the router, the NBN connection or your provider. This single question halves the search.
- Check for an outage before touching anything else. Look up your provider’s outage page or app on your phone using mobile data. No amount of restarting fixes an area outage.
- Look at where your router actually lives. On the floor, in a cupboard, or behind the TV — all three strangle coverage. Shoulder height, out in the open and central to the house makes an immediate difference, and it’s free.
Stop and call us if…
- It drops out around the same time every day, or started after a storm. That pattern points at a line or hardware fault. Note the times — that log is diagnostic gold, and it’s exactly the evidence that gets providers to act.
- Your provider says “everything looks fine from our end” but it plainly isn’t. That gap — between their test and your lounge room — is precisely what we measure and prove.
