What you do in the first few minutes matters more than anything else. None of these steps needs technical skill, and each one closes a door.

  1. Disconnect from the internet. Turn WiFi off or unplug the network cable. This stops data leaving your computer and stops the infection spreading to other devices in the house.
  2. Don’t pay anything, and don’t call numbers on a popup. Full-screen warnings with a “Microsoft” or “Telstra” support number are scams — every single time. The scary countdown timer is theatre.
  3. If the browser is locked by a scare page, close it with Task Manager. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select your browser, click End task. Don’t click anything inside the popup itself — even its “close” button can be a trap.
  4. From a different device, change your important passwords. Email and banking first. Use your phone on mobile data, not the infected computer — you don’t know yet what it’s watching.

Stop and call us if…

  • There’s a ransom note on screen demanding payment to unlock your files. Power off and call — don’t pay. Payment funds the next round and frequently doesn’t return the files anyway.
  • You gave a caller remote access to your computer. Disconnect it from the internet now; if you use that machine for banking, call your bank next, then us.
  • You’re tempted to keep using the machine for banking or shopping “carefully” until it’s cleaned. Don’t — a keylogger doesn’t care how careful you are.
