A sensible order of work
Spend first on the steps that stop the most common attacks.
- Multi-factor authentication on email and every administrator account. A stolen password then is not enough on its own.
- Backups you have tested. A backup nobody has restored from is a hope, not a backup.
- Updates. Operating systems and key applications patched and supported, with unsupported machines identified.
- Fewer powerful accounts. Administrator rights only where they are needed, and no shared logins.
- Email protection. Sender authentication records (SPF, DKIM and DMARC) and sensible filtering, so it is harder to impersonate your business.
- A password manager. So staff stop reusing passwords and keeping them in spreadsheets.
What task-based security cannot do
Everything above is a point-in-time improvement. It makes you meaningfully harder to attack, but nobody is watching afterwards: a new risk next month, a laptop that falls out of date or an alert at 2am will go unnoticed until someone calls.
If you think an account has been compromised, call us straight away — we can help secure the accounts and work out what was reached. For a serious incident, such as ransomware or data theft, we will tell you honestly if it needs specialist incident response rather than pretend otherwise.
Signs an account may already be compromised
If you see any of these, call before changing anything.
- Sign-in prompts you did not trigger
- Customers receiving odd emails or invoices that appear to come from you
- Mail that is being forwarded to an address nobody recognises
- Sent items you did not send, or messages that vanish from the inbox
- Sign-in alerts from places nobody in the business has been
- A supplier asking you to confirm changed bank details
Cybersecurity isn’t really a break/fix problem
Security works best when somebody is continuously responsible for it.
If your business has reached the point where cybersecurity, backups, monitoring and risk management need ongoing attention, we recommend moving from PAYG support to Defy IT.
Defy IT provides managed IT and cybersecurity services designed for organisations that require ongoing protection.
