01  Sunshine Coast

Afford IT works from Indooroopilly in Brisbane, and the Sunshine Coast is a remote-support region. We do not attend onsite here, and we tell you that before you book rather than after.

What that rules out is narrower than most people expect. The majority of business IT calls — email, Microsoft 365, accounts, software, security settings — are problems that live in the cloud or in the settings of a machine you are sitting at. Those can be fixed remotely, usually in a single session that starts within a day and finishes inside the hour.

02  Examples

Three typical remote jobs

Typical examples of the work, not particular customers.

  1. The Friday afternoon email fault. A practice’s email stops sending an hour before close. Remotely we find whether it is the mailbox, the account or the connection, fix it, and confirm mail is flowing before anyone leaves.
  2. The Monday new starter. A designer joins an agency. Their account, licence, shared mailboxes and multi-factor authentication are ready before they arrive, and we are on a short call while they sign in.
  3. The sole trader who needs it tidied. Files in four places, passwords in a notebook, no backup. One planned session puts email, files and backups in order and leaves the owner with something simple to follow.
03  Who we hear from

The business mix up the coast

It is a region of small operators, which suits remote work well.

Health and wellness

Clinics around Kawana and Sippy Downs

The hospital precinct at Birtinya and the university at Sippy Downs draw allied health and wellness practices. Their priorities are secure client records, controlled access and tested backups.

Tourism and retail

Noosa, Mooloolaba and Coolum

Hospitality, accommodation and retail businesses. They need email and bookings systems that work on a busy morning, and staff accounts that can be set up quickly for the season.

Trades and home-based

Caloundra, Nambour and the hinterland

Building trades, creative businesses and sole operators working from home or a shed. Often a single person is IT, bookkeeper and boss, and wants it simple.

04  Connections

Hinterland connections and remote support

Remote support needs the computer to start and to reach the internet, and connection quality varies across the coast, particularly further into the hinterland. If a connection is dropping out, we will say whether it is something on your side to fix or something to raise with the provider.

When the fixed connection is down altogether, a phone hotspot is often enough for us to get a laptop working. It is slower, but it is usually enough to sort out an account or email problem.

05  Honest limits

When the answer is “find someone local”

A computer that will not start, a failed drive, cabling or the installation of Wi-Fi equipment cannot be done online by us or anyone else. For those, the realistic options are a local installer, or — for a drive with data on it — sending it to our Brisbane workshop for assessment.

If a job needs someone in the room and a trip to Brisbane makes no sense, we say so. It is a better outcome than taking a booking we cannot keep.

06  Busy seasons

Before the school holidays, not during

Coast businesses often get their year decided in a few weeks, around the summer and the school holidays. A mail fault or a locked-out account in the middle of that costs far more than the same fault in a quiet fortnight.

The cheap way to protect a busy season is a short remote check beforehand: confirming that seasonal staff accounts are ready, that multi-factor authentication works for everyone, that the backup completed last night and that nobody is relying on a computer that is on its last legs.

07  Questions

Common questions

No. The Sunshine Coast is a remote-support region for us. We say so before you book, and for hands-on work we will suggest finding someone local.

Remote sessions usually start within a day, and most finish inside the hour. If it is urgent, say so when you call and we will tell you what is possible.

No — $168 an hour with a one-hour minimum, no callout, travel or booking fee, and you are told before a job goes past the hour.

Yes, that is a common job. A single planned session can set up email, Microsoft 365, backups and basic security. You are not required to take anything ongoing afterwards.
