Computer Repair in Taringa

Taringa sits directly between our Station Road office and the university, and it has changed character considerably over the past decade. What was once a quiet pocket of post-war houses is now one of the densest unit corridors in Brisbane's inner west.

That density drives the work. A large share of Taringa jobs are network problems created by the building itself rather than by anything the customer has done wrong — and they are frequently misdiagnosed as an internet plan problem, which leads people to pay more each month for something that was never going to fix it.

The Taringa we actually see

The blocks clustered around Taringa station and along Moggill Road are where most of our callouts land. Many are recent builds with the NBN termination point in a hallway cupboard and the supplied router left exactly where the installer put it — behind a door, inside a cabinet, or in a corner of the building furthest from where anyone sits.

Above Swann Road the housing stock changes to older detached homes on larger blocks, with the usual consequence of long copper runs and routers positioned for the convenience of the phone line rather than the household.

Taringa also has an unusually high proportion of share houses, thanks to the walk to UQ and the train two stops from the city. Share houses bring their own recurring problem, which we will come to.

Common Taringa jobs

Share-house networks. Five people, five laptops, three consoles and a television all pulling from one router that came free with the plan. The result is not really a speed problem, it is a capacity and contention problem, and the answer is usually a better router rather than a bigger plan. We are frequently able to demonstrate this on the spot — the same connection, the same plan, dramatically different results once the hardware in the middle is adequate.

Concrete and steel. Unit buildings here are built from materials that WiFi does not travel through. A router in a hallway cupboard three rooms from the bedroom will never deliver a usable signal to that bedroom, no matter what it costs. Mesh nodes or a powerline link solve it; a faster plan does not.

Student laptops. Proximity to UQ means we see a lot of them — cracked hinges, failed batteries, keyboards that met a drink, and drives that were never backed up. If your machine is showing signs of drive failure and your work is on it, the priority order is: stop using it, call us, and only then think about repair.

Moving in and moving out. Taringa's rental turnover is high, and a lot of our work is simply getting a household connected and printing again after a move.

Getting to you in Taringa

Taringa is around five minutes from our office, so we can often fit it in the same day and reliably the next. If you are in a unit block, tell us the building access arrangements when you book — visitor parking, intercom, or whether we need to be buzzed in — because that is what most often delays a Taringa appointment.
