Computer Repair in Ashgrove
Classic Ashgrovian character homes are lovely to live in and genuinely hostile to WiFi — which is why coverage is the most common reason this suburb calls us.
Ashgrove is one of Brisbane's best-known character suburbs, defined by the Ashgrovian — the substantial interwar timber home with its wide gables, sleepouts and multiple small rooms. It is a settled, school-heavy, family suburb close to the inner north-west.
It is also, from a wireless point of view, a difficult place to get right, and for a reason most residents have never been told.
Why character homes fight WiFi
The problem is rarely the timber. It is what has been put behind the timber during eighty years of renovation — foil-backed sisalation, installed for insulation, which behaves close to a mirror for a wireless signal. A router in the front room of a renovated Ashgrovian can struggle to reach the back bedroom despite the house not being especially large.
The floor plans compound it. Ashgrovians tend toward many smaller rooms rather than open plan, with solid internal walls, chimney breasts and enclosed sleepouts. Every one of those is another obstacle. Then there is the classic under-the-house conversion — a rumpus room or study built in below, separated from the router by a timber floor and often a layer of foil.
Households respond by buying faster plans, which changes nothing, because the connection at the wall was never the limiting factor.
Ashgrove jobs
Coverage in a character home. The reliable fix is either a mesh system positioned by testing rather than by guesswork, or — better where it is feasible — a single ethernet run to a more central point with the router relocated there. In a house with under-floor or roof access, that cable run is often much easier than people assume and it solves the problem permanently rather than working around it.
Renovation timing. Ashgrove renovates constantly. If your walls or floors are open, that is the moment to run network cable. It is inexpensive at that point and effectively impossible later without mess.
School families. With several well-known schools nearby, a lot of Ashgrove households run multiple devices with homework deadlines attached. Printer faults and laptops that will not start are common and usually quick.
Slow family computers. The standard causes — a mechanical drive that should be an SSD, dust in the cooling, and years of accumulated startup software. An SSD upgrade routinely rescues a machine the household had already decided to replace.
Photos and documents. Long-held family homes accumulate decades of irreplaceable material on a single computer. Setting up an automatic backup takes under an hour and removes a category of loss that no repair can undo.
Under-the-house conversions. Almost every Ashgrovian eventually gains a room below — a study, a rumpus, a teenager's retreat. These are consistently the worst-covered spaces in the house, because the signal has to pass through a timber floor and whatever insulation sits within it. If that room is where someone works or studies, it deserves either its own mesh node or a cable, rather than being the room that everyone accepts is bad.
Scam awareness. As in every established suburb, we take calls after someone has been persuaded to grant remote access to their machine. Disconnect it from the internet, call your bank first if any financial details were involved, and then call us.
