01  What’s inside

The 23 points, in five groups

Each point is a plain statement. If it is true for your business, you tick it. If it is not, it goes on your list of gaps. You get it as a tick-as-you-go page and as a printable PDF.

  1. 01 Computers and softwareOld and unpatched machines are the most common way a small problem becomes a big one. 5 points
  2. 02 Logins and accessShared and forgotten logins are how a former staff member or a stranger ends up inside your systems. 5 points
  3. 03 Backup and recoveryA backup you have never restored from is a hope, not a backup. 4 points
  4. 04 Network and Wi-FiThe router is the front door. It is also the thing nobody has logged into since the day it was installed. 4 points
  5. 05 People and paperworkMost outages are made longer by nobody knowing who to call or where anything is. 5 points

For example: “Every computer runs a version of Windows or macOS that still receives security updates. (Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025.)”

02  Why it matters

Why a small business needs an IT health check

Most small business IT problems are not dramatic. They are a laptop that is five years old and nobody noticed, an email login only the previous office manager knew, a backup that stopped running in March. Each is cheap to fix when you find it and expensive to find out about the hard way.

This checklist is the same set of questions we work through when a business asks us to look over their setup. Tick what is true today. What is left unticked is your to-do list, in priority order within each group.

Made for you if:

  • You run a business with roughly 1 to 25 staff and no in-house IT person
  • IT is “fine” until something breaks, and you would like to know where the weak spots are first
  • You are about to hire, move office, or pay for IT help and want a clear picture before you do

IT Health Check FAQs

How often should a small business review its IT?
At least once a year, and whenever you hire, move office, replace computers or change providers. Re-running this checklist each time takes about ten minutes.
Do I need an IT person to complete the health check?
No. Every point is a plain yes or no statement. If you cannot answer one, that is a gap in itself: it means nobody in the business knows.
What should I do about the gaps it finds?
Fix logins and backups first, because those cause the most damage when they fail. You can work through the rest yourself, or we can go through them with you onsite or remotely at hookEm: 'a very bad week',68 an hour.
Is it really free?
Yes. The checklist is free, and you are under no obligation to buy anything or book anything. If you would like help with what it turns up, we can do that as pay-as-you-go work, but that is your call.
What happens to my details?
We use them to send you the checklist and to follow up about it. We do not sell or share your details. See the Privacy Policy for the full version.
Do I need to be an Afford IT customer?
No. The checklist works for any small business, whoever looks after your IT today.
Who is Afford IT?
A Brisbane IT support business with a workshop in Indooroopilly. We support small businesses on a pay-as-you-go basis: no contract and no monthly minimum, onsite across Brisbane, Ipswich, Moreton Bay and Logan, and remotely for the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast.
